Inn Good Company With Florence Houston

We’re thrilled to announce the next chapter of our Inn Good Company series at The Walmer Castle, featuring the remarkable London-based artist Florence Houston in conversation with the brilliant Olivia Paterson, Director of Lynsey Ingram Gallery and curator of our very own art collection.

The talk will discuss Florence’s remarkable paintings, one of which, Berry Demon, hangs in our very own private dining room, The Westbourne Room. Florence trained over four years at Charles H. Cecil in Florence, Italy, where she refined her technique in oil painting with a focus on portraiture. She paints nostalgic and familiar objects, exploring their conflicting characteristics and society’s preconceived views of them.

Florence started painting jellies in 2021, inspired by illustrations of ornate Victorian jellies and childhood memories of eating them from paper plates. She’s drawn to their ability to be simultaneously beautiful and grotesque.

The evening will begin with arrival drinks from 7pm in the Lonsdale Room, followed by the talk and Q&A from 7:30 to 8:30pm.
